The Chinese Hairless Dog is actually a variety of of Chinese Crested. In this breed there are two varieties, the Hairless and the Powderpuff. Interestingly enough, both of these varieties can be found in the same litter. Some of the puppies will have hair and some won’t. When looking for a dog that doesn’t shed, I would recommend either variety, as neither of them shed much and have very maneagable fur. The Powderpuff variety does require additional grooming to avoid matting of it’s long, soft fur. It is important to note however, that the hairless variety isn’t completely hairless.Chinese Hairless Dogs still have a bit of hair. How much varies upon the individual. Most will have some hair at the end of thier tail as well as “socks” of hair on their feet. They will also have a plume of hair on their head, which is obviously the “crest” that lends itself to the name “Chinese Crested”. It’s also possible for them to have hair elswewhere scatterd amongst their pale fleshy to black colored skin. For example it is not unlikely that you will find them with hair on their chins like little beards. It is even possible to get what is called a “Hairy Hairless” where the incomplete dominant trait that causes the hairless mutation is not strongly pronounced. For these individuals, left untrimmed, they may grow what at first glance may look like a full coat. This is still technically a Hairless Variety of the breed though, because they only have the single coat, while the powderpuff variety has a softer double coat.
Besides the non-shedding qualites of the Chinese Hairless Dog, they also have other qualities which make them great city or apartment dwellers. One of those great qualities is that it only grows to an average of 13 pounds. This is the perfect size for travelling in a car or living in a place without a huge backyard. They also require a lot of interaction with their humans including petting and being close to them. This is easier to accomplish if they live in a small place with you, since spending time with them will always be convenient. The Chinese Hairless will also be a good dog to have in the city, because even though it is small, it will act like a small guard dog to warn you of intruders.
It is important that you know the care for a hairless Chinese Crested will be somewhat different than the care you would need to provide to a dog with a full, layered coat. For instance, on most dogs, you would never have to worry about sunburns. Dogs spend days at a time outdoors in the sun without a hint of burn anywhere on them. However, because the Hairless Dog’s skin is bare, they will burn just like you or I. Also, because their skin is always exposed they need skin care products like you or I to keep it from getting dried out or dermatitis. Every couple days it should be moisturized
